Associate Director, Work Integrated Learning

Reporting to the Executive Director, Finance and Operations (EDFO), the Associate Director, is responsible for overseeing and managing the work-integrated portfolio for the Faculty of Arts and Science and the development and delivery of work-integrated learning (WIL) programming.

Director will develop an industry and student engagement strategy that considers student, industry (including government and not-for-profit organizations), faculty and institutional expectations and objectives.

The Associate Director is responsible for attracting domestic and international students through a WIL program that allows students to gain paid work experience. Working closely with senior leadership the incumbent will lead strategy, development, and management of programs that blend academic learning with practical work experiences, focusing on building industry partnerships, ensuring program quality and innovation, managing teams, securing funding, and fostering student career success through strong connections with employers and stakeholders. This position is integral to the Faculty of Arts and Science students successfully attaining and completing WIL work experiences with competitive business sectors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Management

  • Leads the strategic direction, budget, operational planning and leadership of staff within the WIL team.
  • Determines operational objectives for the WIL team, providing day-to-day leadership and direction for successful execution.
  • Determines and manages staffing needs as it relates to WIL. This may also include the use of contract workers.
  • Participates in strategic planning and program upgrades and/or changes for all programs. Researches and makes recommendations on new program initiatives, including budget implications, to the Dean.
  • Creates strategic integration between corporate relations and professional development programming for students within the Faculty for ongoing support for and success of WIL programming.
  • Ensures and supports alignment with Faculty of Arts and Science academic programs and strategy.
  • Effectively manages relationships with alumni to foster support and engagement with Faculty.
  • Develops and implements new student and staff-related policies within the scope of the WIL team.
  • Manages data that strategically supports the Faculty’s ranking through the collection of data relating to job placements, interviews, new business, new activity, job postings and interview statistics with direct corporate feedback.
  • Manages performance by establishing annual performance standards, reviewing and evaluating performance and conducting formal performance reviews on an ongoing basis.
  • Assess staff training and development needs, and ensures that employees receive training required to improve and sustain successful performance.
  • Investigates, addresses and resolves student complaints and/or concerns with regard to any staff interactions or services delivered under their authority.
  • Investigates, addresses and resolves employee/labour relations issues, including making decisions regarding disciplinary and discharge matters.

Corporate Relations and Business Development

  • Collaborates with Faculty stakeholders to ensure that there will be an appropriately equipped supply of students into the corporate talent acquisition environment.
  • Creates and implements the annual WIL plan for each program, which includes scheduling all activities throughout the year.
  • Builds, attracts and retains positive relationships with representatives from the school’s corporate partners with an understanding of employer needs and priorities to continuously improve service and support
  • Develops and launches annual business development campaign to drive work-integrated recruitment and connections, leveraging alumni and advisory boards. Leads marketing, brand and employment strategies based on labour market analysis, industry trends and alignment with Queen’s values.
  • Promotes the student population of the Faculty of Arts and Science to corporate partners and alumni in Canada and internationally through regular contacts, by ensuring awareness of student talent and find relevant, credit-worthy and safe opportunities for students.
  • Develops customer service standards and processes that include an end-to-end employment process to handle conflicts and assessments of employer satisfaction.
  • Researches corporate relationship programs delivered by other top tier schools in order to advance work-integrated learning and funding opportunities
