The Opportunity:

The Housekeeping Department within Facilities and Business Operations is seeking Custodial Specialists to support a clean, safe, and welcoming campus environment. This position directly impacts the daily experience of students, staff, visitors, and campus partners through consistent service and positive, professional interactions.

The Custodial Specialist I maintains assigned areas to established standards, responds to service requests, and addresses issues as they arise. Responsibilities include routine, project, and deep cleaning throughout the year, as well as responding to emergencies or unforeseen situations when needed. Assignments may rotate to support department needs and cross‑training.

This role requires basic custodial knowledge and skills, including hard floor care, carpet care, and sanitation practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Clean and stock restrooms and other common-use facilities according to standards, including sinks, shower/tubs, toilets, stalls, receptacles, mirrors, etc.

  • Apply knowledge of industry sanitation practices and chemicals.

  • Vacuum carpeted areas, including moving/replacing furniture and spot cleaning as needed.

  • Sweep, dry/wet mop floors, stairwells, entries, and other assigned areas.

  • Perform waste removal, including trash and recycling.

  • Conduct surface cleaning of furniture, walls, equipment, and kitchen appliances by dusting, wiping, and scrubbing, including performing dusting in high, hard-to-reach areas.

  • Shampoo and extract carpeted areas and/or upholstery.

  • Refinish flooring through stripping, waxing, and buffing (including tile and VCT).

  • Clean windows, glass, and building entries.

  • Respond to emergency or urgent situations (e.g., water leaks, biohazard cleanup, limited air quality issues).

  • Assist with inventory control and security, maintaining custodial closets in an organized manner.

  • Report deficiencies such as maintenance issues, health, or sanitation concerns.

  • Stand for up to eight hours and lift a minimum of 50 lbs. with or without an accommodation.

  • Occasional schedule flexibility may be necessary to support university events, which may include weekends and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of 9th grade.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ year of previous work experience in an operational environment.

  • Experience with small and large tools required for essential tasks (floor care equipment, mop/mop bucket, dust mop, broom, scrub pad, etc.).

  • Familiarity with work order related software.

  • Capacity to understand safety guidelines and use approved chemicals by Environmental Health & Safety to perform essential job functions.

  • Customer service-oriented mindset with the ability to interact professionally with staff and respond to inquiries courteously.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to follow written and oral instructions effectively.

  • Basic decision-making abilities to assess and address cleaning and maintenance needs.

  • Proven ability to adapt to changing work locations and job assignments within indoor facilities.

Health Assessment Required:

UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.

UCF is seeking to fill multiple roles for the Custodial Specialist I. Candidates for this job posting will be considered for additional vacancies in this department.

New hires selected for this position at the University of Central Florida can expect to be offered the base salary amount for the role. Compensation is determined in alignment with UCF’s pay structure and internal equity considerations.

Position requires a valid Class E driver’s license. The position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.

Please note that under this position title, the department is considering hiring for multiple work schedules. Specific schedule assignments will be determined based on departmental needs and candidate availability. Applicants may be considered for any of the available schedules and are encouraged to indicate their scheduling preferences, if any, within their application materials.

  • Monday - Friday (12:00 PM to 3:00 PM)
