Please confirm the starting salary with the hiring department before accepting a job offer.</ol><div style="text-align: justify;">An Electric Station Operator operates high voltage electric and auxiliary equipment in hydroelectric generating, receiving and distributing stations and in high voltage DC Converter Plants; performs routine inspections, meter readings, and cleaning of high voltage equipment and facilities; prepares reports and documentation related to work activities in station; and does other related duties.<br> <br><strong><u>NOTES</u></strong><strong>:</strong></div><ol><li style="text-align: justify;">All entry-level positions are temporary training positions as defined in Civil Service Commission Rule 5.30. An Electric Station Operator must successfully complete a two-year intensive on-the-job and classroom training program in order to receive an appointment to a regular Electric Station Operator position.<li style="text-align: justify;">Assignments are subject to rotating shifts and various work locations throughout the City's power system.<li style="text-align: justify;">A trainee must be able to communicate in English in a readily understandable manner and must be able to write clearly and legibly in English.<li style="text-align: justify;">A trainee will be required to climb a ladder up to 40 feet in height and perform work activities in elevated positions; carry a forty-pound load for a minimum distance of 100 feet; and hold a one and one-half inch fire hose at a minimum operating pressure of 100 psi for the purpose of washing insulators.<li style="text-align: justify;">See the corresponding "Job Preview" for additional information regarding the duties of an Electric Station Operator in a trainee and/or regular position. In the on-line multiple-choice test, the following competencies may be evaluated: Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Safety Focus, including knowledge of: general safety practices and procedures, such as maintaining safe approach distances and properly using Personal Protective Equipment while working near potentially hazardous energized equipment; the use and care of safety equipment; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: recording instruments such as kilowatt meters, voltage meters, and ammeters sufficient to verify equipment status and interpret readings; various types and functions of generating, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical equipment, and electric circuitry sufficient to operate the equipment safely and effectively; and other necessary skills, knowledge and abilities.<br> <br>The qualifying multiple-choice test will be proctored and administered on-line during a single session. Candidates invited to participate in the on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test as instructed from a remote location using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection. Candidates will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the dates and specific steps on how to take the qualifying multiple-choice test on-line.
