Firefighter
The City of Hanford is looking to fill one (1) Firefighter vacancy in the Fire Department. This position performs fire suppression, emergency medical assistance, life safety, and hazardous materials mitigation activities in support of the overall mission of the Fire Department; to provide fire prevention enforcement and education; and other duties as related. <br><br>SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED<br><br>Receives general supervision from assigned immediate supervisor.<p><u>EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES</u> - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: </p>Respond to emergency alarms and perform all necessary firefighting and rescue activities, including operation of firefighting equipment.<br><br>Perform emergency medical services as an EMT-1 or higher certification or licensure.<br><br>Assist in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment.<br><br>Attends specialized training in firefighting, fire prevention inspections, and first aid.<br><br>Conduct fire prevention inspections to eliminate fire hazards through the enforcement of fire codes and fire safety education.<br><br>Maintain firefighting and EMS equipment, fire station and related grounds, facilities and supplies in a clean, orderly, and usable condition as assigned.<br><br>Educate the public in fire prevention; conduct station tours and training for the public.<br><br>Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.<br><br>Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.<br><br>Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication.<br><br>Perform related duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<br><br><u>Knowledge of</u>:<br><br>Principles and practices of fire prevention, suppression, and emergency medical services.<br><br>Functions, characteristics, proper use, and maintenance of firefighting equipment and supplies.<br><br>Hazardous materials and their properties.<br><br>Basic English reading, writing, and arithmetic.<br><br>Current laws and regulations pertaining to fire prevention and safety.<br><br>First aid and rescue methods.<br><br><u>Ability to</u>:<br><br>Perform firefighting and emergency medical services.<br><br>Intermittently, review and evaluate documents related to department operations; observe, identify and problem solve office operations and procedures; understand, interpret, and explain department policies and procedures; explain operations and problem solve issues for the public and with staff.<br><br>Intermittently, sit while driving to emergency scenes or performing office work; stand and walk while performing suppression activities; exert strenuous physical effort; bend, squat, twist, crawl or climb; climb ladders, or climb up onto apparatus to begin operations; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; use telephone, write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of up to 100 pounds.<br><br>Operate various types of firefighting and rescue equipment.<br><br>Maintain firefighting and EMS equipment and fire station facilities.<br><br>Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority.<br><br>Operate and use modern office equipment including computers and applicable software.<br><br>Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.<br><br>Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.<br><br>Communicate effectively orally and in writing through all common communications platforms.<br><br>Relate effectively with people of varied academic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy.<br><br>Establish and maintain effective, cooperative, and collaborative working relationships with others.<br> <br><u>Experience and Education</u><br> <br>Experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:<br> <br><u>Experience</u>:<br> <br>Completion of a California Firefighter 1 academy prior to application submittal.<br> <br><u>Education</u>:<br> <br>Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)<br> <br><u>Licenses and Certificates</u><br><br>Possession of a valid California driver’s license.<br><br>Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate California driver’s license for the operation of fire apparatus (firefighter endorsement) within twelve months of appointment. Must be certified as a Hanford Apparatus Operator within 18 months of hire date. <br><br>Possession of valid CPR and EMT-1 certificates.<br><br>Possession of a California State Accredited Firefighter I certificate within the first year of employment.<br><br>Possession of a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate valid within twelve (12) months of application submittal.<br><br>Must be on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List by the time of application submittal, with a passing score of 70% or greater.<br><br>Two or more consecutive years of firefighter experience will satisfy the requirement of a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC).<p data-pasted="true">The application screening will involve a competitive evaluation of relevant education, training, and work experience, followed by a written examination and/or an interview before an Oral Board to identify the most qualified candidates. <u>Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee applicants an interview, and the screening committee's decision is final</u>. Candidates deemed eligible for appointment to the position will be placed on the City’s Certified Eligibility List. Applicants will receive written notification regarding the results of all phases of the recruitment process leading up to the establishment of the Eligibility List, if applicable.</p>
