This position serves as an Environmental Health Technologist for the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) within the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene. The NADP is a nationwide network dedicated to monitoring the chemistry of precipitation and atmospheric deposition across the United States. Established in 1978, the program collects and analyzes weekly precipitation samples from hundreds of monitoring sites to examine trends in concentrations and deposition of sulfur, nitrogen, mercury, ammonia, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The data generated by NADP supports critical research into acid rain, nutrient cycling, ecosystem health, and the effectiveness of air quality regulations. The program operates through a collaborative partnership among federal and state agencies, universities, tribes, and other organizations, and its long-term datasets are widely used by scientists, policymakers, and land managers to assess environmental trends and inform decisions related to air and water quality protection.
The Health Technologist will receive and login precipitation and other environmental samples. They will perform data entry on all samples received and will track the information in a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The technologist will also receive used sampling supplies, and they will clean, prepare and ship outgoing supplies. They will inventory sample and shipping supplies in a web-based tracking system and maintain stocks of all materials in order to meet the needs of the program. They will be the lead point person for the new PFAS network and communicate regularly with the PFAS analytical team. This position is responsible for the careful, methodical review of large data sets for multiple NADP networks, checking for inconsistencies and data entry errors using established procedures and checklists. The technologist will perform all necessary quality assurance required for sample and supply processing. Additionally, they will participate in the design and execution of special studies and research projects as deemed necessary by program management, fulfill researcher requests for archived samples and participate in sample collection at local NADP sites.
The successful candidate must be able to manage time efficiently, and pay attention to detail, but also be able to see the big picture.
The position requires effective personal and team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit and organization. The technologist will be in close communication with members of their own team and members of the entire NADP group. The position also requires someone who is self-motivated and can work independently. They will need to utilize critical thinking and troubleshooting skills to address issues that arise. They will be able to perform repetitive work, but be able to plan and carryout new tasks as needed. Multitasking, prioritization and organization are key skills for this position.
The employee must demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with managers, supervisors, co-workers and all customers and consistently model appropriate behaviors and assist other staff in developing effective relationships. The employee is expected to provide constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of the State Laboratory of Hygiene and its mission, use data collection tools as appropriate; use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit; present ideas, carry out assignments, provide information as required and participate in continuous learning through professional development activities.
