By combining aerial drones, 360 and fixed cameras, ground robots and proprietary AI, we’re bringing the power of automation and visual intelligence to all stakeholders, from the field to the boardroom.

At DroneDeploy, we thrive in a mostly remote-first culture rooted in innovation and impact. We’ve been recognized as a Best Place to Work in the SF Bay Area and named one of America’s Great Places to Work—but what truly sets us apart is the experience you gain: solving real-world challenges with cutting-edge technology, surrounded by teammates who are as passionate as they are supportive. Our team is bold, mission-driven, and building something that matters. We foster a culture where a variety of perspectives drive smart decisions, and where growth—both personal and professional—is part of the journey. Whether it’s flexible schedules, family-friendly benefits, or our strong track record of internal promotions, we invest in people as much as we do in product. If you’re looking to be part of something ambitious, authentic, and transformative, you’ll find your place at DroneDeploy.

Role Overview

DroneDeploy is transforming how industries see the world. As part of the Ground Mobile team, you’ll build the innovative 3D scanning tools that turn smartphones and 360° cameras into professional-grade mapping devices. Our mission is simple: create the most reliable, user-centric capture tech on the planet. From pre-construction to long-term operations, your code will empower customers to capture reality with a single tap.

In this role, you will create the most reliable, user-centric capture experience on Android. Share with us your distinctive strengths; we're keen to understand the unique perspectives you bring to the table.

Work Environment

Work Model: Remote, work from home (US-based). We are a remote-first team that stays synced through channels such as Slack, Google Meet, and shared documentation. Candidates located in the Mountain, Central, or Eastern time zones are preferred.

Core Collaboration Hours: The team is remote-first (US-based) and maintains 5 hours of core overlap with Pacific Time. For example, a common window is 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM ET / 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM PT.

Travel: Occasional (1-2 domestic trips per year) for team offsites, industry conferences (like DroidCon), or company events.

Responsibilities

Define the technical foundation and architecture for the Ground Mobile Android app, in partnership with your teammates. The decisions you make will shape the codebase for years to come.

Build resilient Kotlin client-side logic with offline-first principles. Real-world constraints include: low-connectivity job sites, large capture sets, and intermittent hardware signals.

Collaborate with product and design to help translate customer frustrations into elegant technical solutions.

Write the code that talks to 360-degree cameras and high-accuracy GPS. You’ll handle the "messy" reality of hardware integration on Android’s diverse device ecosystem.

Establish Android CI/CD, testing standards, and release tooling from scratch, working cross-platform to bring wins to our iOS app when it makes sense.

Use ARCore and AI to prototype new ways to see the world. We value the "failed" experiment that teaches us something new.

Elevate team output through reviews and hackathons, leveraging empathetic feedback and new AI-assisted tools to help your peers ship better code, faster.

Participate in occasional onsite visits (1–2 trips per year) to experience field workflows directly and build customer empathy.

Requirements

5+ years of experience delivering mobile applications, including meaningful contributions to a production app with a significant user base or high architectural complexity.

Strong command of Kotlin and modern Android practices

Experience with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or other inter-hardware communication with Android

Proficiency with Android Studio Profiler, Firebase Crashlytics, and/or monitoring and observability technologies that enable you to troubleshoot crashes, identify memory issues, and debug hardware connectivity problems across a diverse device ecosystem.

Proactive use of AI-assisted tools (i.e., coding agents, LLM harnesses) to accelerate your software development and deliver more value to customers more quickly.

Experience explaining complex technical trade-offs to non-technical teammates to drive project alignment.

Experience with or a demonstrated eagerness to learn our backend stack (Python, Tornado, MongoDB) to trace data from device to database.

Experience with ARCore, spatial computing, or 3D capture workflows on Android.

Familiarity with external camera hardware protocols, particularly Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, or the Open Spherical Camera (OSC) standard.

Experience taking early-stage or proof-of-concept mobile work and turning it into a production-quality app with a coherent, debuggable, observable architecture.

Professional iOS experience, as this role may contribute to both our Android and iOS apps.

Why Join DroneDeploy?

Greenfield ownership, real-world constraints: You won’t inherit a decade of technical debt. You’ll define the architecture for Ground Mobile Android from scratch with the benefit of a production iOS app and years of learnings from the field.

Technical challenges that go far beyond the screen: 360° cameras, high-accuracy GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct on a fragmented device ecosystem, in low-connectivity job sites.

AI-first by design: We build AI tooling into how we actually work, so engineers can focus on the hard problems, not the repetitive ones.

Real-world impact: Your code will be used by workers in construction and energy capturing real job sites. You’ll know the customers, see the feedback, and feel the difference your work makes.

Deliberate by design: We are thoughtful by default.
