Software Engineer 2 — Data Platform Enablement (Hybrid - Seattle, WA)

The Data Platform Enablement (DPE) team builds and operates the infrastructure and tools that power data and reporting across Nordstrom.  We own BI platform infrastructure, data platform governance, cloud infrastructure across AWS and GCP, and the automation that keeps it all running.  We are a platform team — our customers are everyone at Nordstrom who uses data and reports, from store personnel and merchants to analysts, data scientists, and leadership.

On our team, you will ship automation that eliminates manual work, deploy and operate services on Kubernetes, manage cloud infrastructure across AWS and GCP, and build internal tools that make the data platform easier to use.  We write code to solve operational problems, not to build data pipelines.  We move fast, own what we ship end-to-end, and use AI tooling extensively in our daily work.

This role is offered as hybrid in Seattle, WA.  Candidates must be available to work in office at the Nordstrom corporate headquarters a minimum of 4 days/week to be considered for this position.

Read this first: We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet all the qualifications but feel you would be a good fit for the position.  Nordstrom is an equal-opportunity employer.  We are building a diverse, inclusive workforce and hope you will join us!

A day in the life...

  • Build and maintain automation that manages BigQuery datasets, access permissions, and governance workflows at enterprise scale.

  • Deploy and operate services on Kubernetes using CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, Terraform, and infrastructure-as-code practices.

  • Own the reliability of the platforms you support — monitor with New Relic, respond to PagerDuty alerts, diagnose issues, and build automation to prevent recurrence.

  • Manage cloud infrastructure across AWS and GCP, including cost optimization, security compliance, and resource lifecycle.

  • Build internal tools and web applications that make the data platform easier to use.

  • Participate in on-call rotations and take ownership of incident response, troubleshooting production issues across a diverse technology stack.

  • Write clear documentation, complete peer code reviews, and share knowledge with the team through daily demos and technical discussions.

You own this if you have...

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.

  • Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language (Python preferred, but we value strong fundamentals in any language).

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS and GCP

  • Experience with or strong interest in containerization and Kubernetes.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.

  • Comfort working in a platform or SRE-oriented role — supporting systems that other teams depend on and balancing feature work with operational responsibilities.

  • Experience with monitoring, alerting, and incident response tools (New Relic, PagerDuty, CloudWatch, or similar) is a plus.

  • Familiarity with SQL and working knowledge of data platforms.

  • Experience with identity and access management systems (SailPoint, Active Directory, OIDC/SAML federation) is a plus.

  • A bias toward automation — you would rather write a script to solve a recurring problem than do it manually twice.

  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and a willingness to incorporate them into daily work.

  • Strong communication skills — you can explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and collaborate effectively across teams.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
